It’s a lane marker in Portland. Apparently they have a whole bunch of interesting images on their roads. You can see some on Joe Biel’s mini-documentary, “Martinis in the Bike Lane” (there’s a short version here on YouTube).
Of course, this started me wondering how I might roll my own bit of road art. These look like good starting points:
Of course, you’re now faced with the task of blowing up your image to a good road-sized version. You could, I suppose, build a pantograph; but far easier would be to use the charmingly named rasterbator
I can’t wait to try this out.
