swing out loud

swing I read about some playground jamming on pixelsumo today.

My favourite item was the laughing swing, a device that you attach to a regular swing. When you sit on it, it chuckles. As you swing, it laughs, and the higher you go, the harder it laughs. At the peak swinging it is laughing wildly.

It seems odd that a purely mechanical laugh could trigger joy, but then I remembered the radiolab podcast on laugher, where they found that laughter has very little to do with humour (which is possibly a good thing, given that so much humour is about someone else’s discomfort). On the show they explored the power of laughter to calm us, bond us to one another, or to spread… like a virus, which is what the laughing swing is all about.

I don’t know how Rinotchild made their laughing swing, but think you could build one with an arduino connected up with a Parallax 2-axis Memsic 2125 accelerometer, driving a VMUSIC 2 MP3 Module.

On a budget? You might get away with hacking a laugh bag.
